Telescopes

The Harvard College Observatory (HCO) established and operated telescopes around the world to create astronomical glass plate photographs. Many of these telescopes—known as astrographs—were specially built for photographing the night sky. Others were standard telescopes that were later modified to capture images on glass plates.

Over the years, telescope naming practices at HCO have varied, and the names can sometimes be confusing or inconsistent. This page aims to clarify and document the telescopes and instruments historically owned by the Harvard College Observatory that were used to produce the photographic plates now preserved in the Plate Stacks collection.

Please note:
This is not a comprehensive list of every instrument HCO has owned. It also does not include modern telescopes currently in use by the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian, the Harvard College Observatory, or the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. Each historical telescope featured here is associated with a specific series designation, which was used to label and identify the glass plate photographs it produced.
